just a couple of questions maybe some one can help me out or steer me in the right direction ?? first: was out on the lake almost full throttle & motor(1985 johnson 50 hp) just quit ? thought it was out of gas so switched tanks & pumed gas line , had hard time starting , had to have throttle turned up & crank it over a few times & finally would start but run rough for a few seconds & die so i would pump ball & repeat about 5 times could this maybe be the fuel pump ?? does it have a fuel pump every time it would run the gas line ball would need to be pumped up again ?????

second question : leg oil ?? is nautilus SAE 90 marine gear oil ok to use in the leg ???

thanx for any help

Re: fuel pump ??

once you pumped the primer bulb, did it run normal for a short while, or still ran poorly?

oil should be OK

Re: fuel pump ??

gear oil is fine. check your spark, and compression. the bulb will soften, as soon as the fuel pump starts to pull fuel, so i would say the pump is good.

you may have to bring engine to temperture, i suspect power pack.

also replace all fuel lines with alcohol resistant lines. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680

i still had a hard time getting it to start & it ran poorly , turned the throttle up & it ran for a couple of seconds & choked & coughed & sputtered out ?? the engine seemed pretty warm ? but the water pump was working fine ??

the motor was running great , we were out trolling for about 3 hours (just through 2 , 5 gallon pales out the back to get slow enough). pulled our gear in & opened it up across the lake & just died , so it was up to temp . what is the power pack ? new to this & just trying to learn as i go

thanx

Re: fuel pump ??

as Tashadaddy suggests it may be ignition. Check for consistant spark when acting up.
Does it run fine when started cold?
