I have a 1989 Merc 4.3 L and I am wondering about two things. First off, I am wondering what the thin clear hose coming from the fuel pump going to the Carb is. I know it is not the fuel line but something else. Also in the fuel pump, I have the old stone style filter. Is that bad or should i get the new paper one. I am not getting any fuel to the engine and wondering what it could be. everything worked well last time out and now nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: Fuel Pump

Howdy,

The hose is the safety-drain that will port fuel to the carb instead into the bilge if the diaphragm starts leaking (can you spell BOOM?)

The filter is probably fine if you replace it once a year or so....

A water separating filter is probably "better" though.

If you don't have fuel getting to the carb, you'll need to troubleshoot the whole system. It could be a plugged pick-up screen (in the tank) all the way to the carb.....

Rick
