Fuel Pump

Having just read the post by cslaydon, I think I have a similar problem. My engine, 1994 3.0L does have the clear tube from the carb. I have noticed at idle that there seems to be fuel running down the tube away from the carb. I could be wrong about the direction of flow, but it looks like there is definately fuel in the tube. Would this mean that my fuel pump has also failed? Also, the motor will not go past 3000 rpm at full throttle, although the previous owner said that he was running at 44 mph verified by gps. Being new to inboard/outboards, I just assumed that this was some sort of a return line for un-used fuel.

Beattle55
18' Hourston 3.0L Alpha 1 Gen II

Re: Fuel Pump

If there is fuel inside that clear hose, then you definately have a problem. If the diaphram has a hole in it, then that could also explain why you can't get over 3000 rpm's. PLEASE, DO NOT replace it with a regular auto fuel pump.

Re: Fuel Pump

The sight tube is a lifesaving addition to marine fuel pumps and carbs. If fuel is present, it's your indication of a problem. Most certainly the fuel pump needs replacement.

Are you sure the fuel is flowing from the carb? Is should be flowing from pump to carb.

Re: Fuel Pump

Thanks guys. I have been around car engines all my life, but never have seen a clear tube from the carb to the fuel pump before. I did not realize untill reading some of the topics in this forum that the tube was actually a warning device.

Anyway........thanks. A $150.00 part is way cheap considering the consequences that may happen. I will be ordering the new part first thing in the morning.

Re: Fuel Pump

If my head is on straight, the carb creates a small suction that pulls fuel from the ruptured pump up the tube.

Re: Fuel Pump

A marine fuel pump has Two diaphrams. The first acts like an auto diaphram. It pumps the fuel. When that diaphram wears out, the automobile fuel pump just starts spitting gas out the side and onto the road. A marine pump can't do that (or you have a dangerous situation), so it has a small gap and then a second diaphram. When fuel fills this gap, it pumps up to the carb and creates a "rough" running engine, which causes the operator to look at it for causes and should quickly discover the problem (using the easily visible sight tube), and voila! You have a marine fuel pump.
