I have a Mercury 225 EFI which has experienced problems this summer resulting in pistons to score the cylinders. I have had the powerhead rebuilt and the rebuilder has told me to start burning high test fuel due to the ethanol. Can anyone confirm that this is necessary? And if I don't burn high test do I have any other options.

Re: Fuel question

There is a reason your motor went bad.Did they figure out why ?
I doubt that Ethanol caused it.Choptank River isin't too salty but it could be clogged up from salt or mud.Profile??
The high test might have ethanol in it too.Look at the pump and see what your putting in the tank. You don't need premium.
They sell Ethanol stabilizers. If you use your boat a lot then they aren't as necessary. If it sets then the fuel can seperate. It takes months to do this.
Get a fuel/water seperating filter with a site glass(see pic) to monitor the fuel.J

Re: Fuel question

87 octane burns better than 93 octane and if station has ethanol it wont matter what octane it is. Usually a 3.0 EFI if it has piston problems is usually due to injector, oil or depending on year ECU...
