I have a 1990 Force 150. What is the fuel recirculation system and how do you clean it? Thanks Macattack

Re: Fuel recirculation system

It collects excess fuel that goes into the powerhead, but never finds its way into a cylinder to be burned. The fuel settles in the low spots of the powerhead and is routed thru the recirc system, back to the carbs to be used again.

It consists of fittings with oneway check valves in them, some screens (filters), and hoses to carry the gas back to the fuel pump and carbs.

You disassemble and clean the screens, blow out the hoses, and make sure the check valves are working.

Here is a picture.

Re: Fuel recirculation system

Does anyone have a fuel recirculation diagram of a 1991 Force 150? Is it similar to the 1990 model 150? Thanks in advance.....I am new to this forum....as I just purchased a Sylvan deckboat with a 1991 Force. What kind of performance issues would a clogged recirculation system cause?
During the 1st trip out with this boat it is really lacking power at WOT. It cranks and idles fine but has a very slight miss at apx. 1/2 throttle.
Upon returning, I pulled the pulgs and the bottom 2 were wet and didn't look like they had been firing. I checked the fire with my timing light and they all seem to be firing correctly (at cranking rpm).
Also, it was a REAL gas hog! So, I have ordered the fuel pump kits ..... I suspect there might be a hole in one of them.
Any suggestions on other components to inspect?

May need to rebuild your carbs and the fuel pump. A 150 on a pontoon! I usually see 50's and 60's on pontoon boats. But decarb it first and see if that will help!

Re: Fuel recirculation system

I was kinda hoping that at least the fuel pumps had been rebuilt about 2 years ago ....when the power head was rebuilt. I'm not sure about the carbs. This engine has been REALLY taken care of. It was owned by an elderly couple who had the marina service everything exactly as it was supposed to be. The gas was problably getting a little old also.
This isn't really a true "pontoon" boat. It is basically a typical flat bottom fiberglass boat with a "pontoon style" furniture arrangement on it. This a pretty heavy boat for a 19 footer....but it should still move along pretty well with a 150 on it.

Ahh! Friend of mine has 2004 23Ft Hurricane with a 150HP Merc on it. He's getting mid to upper 40's with 6 or more on board. With the recent changes in fuel (more Ethanol based), you probably will need to do the fuel pump and carbs more often.

Definitely decarb that motor.
It has worked hard pushing that boat around.
And if that elderly couple is like most elderly couples, they really carbonned it up.

Link to decarb info:
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=36;t=000016

Also, would be a good idea to switch over to a synthetic oil. You can get it for $20 a gallon now.

Plugged up recirc system will effect performance and fuel economy mostly at idle.

Fuel recirc system is the same on a 1990 and a 1991.
(It changed in 1992)

You guys really should pick up a Clymer repair manual if you are gonna be working on those engines.
