fuel screen in carb all junked up

hello all i have a 1992 ish merc 3.0 lx with a mercarb and was not idleing .. first changed fuel water sep, nothing . then pulled off carb and checked fuel inlet on the carb and found it was three quarters full of what looks like sand??? or a paper filter went bad somewhere....... any ideas????

Ayuh,... The spin-on filter isn't stock,...
I'm guessin' that sand's been there since the original spin-on install...

You say nothing in the fuel water separator. Dumping out the contents and finding "nothing" doesn't mean nothing was there. My bet is the F/W filter was dirty and needed replacement. What you see in the carbs is dirty fuel from corrosion etc. Either way... you need to be replacing that F/W filter every year ESPECIALLY with ethanol fuel use. If you have a fiberglass fuel tank that is another reason for installing a new one every year.

yes i did replace the f-w sep filter and spin on filter??? i was talking fuel filterscreen on carb where fuel enters the carb. but ty for ur input maby i didnt understand you correctly

it also would help to drain your fuel tank out and clean it to be sure mine was bad and i have the same engine but mine just has a fuel pump but in doing all that make sure you make throttle adjustments when taking the cable off the carb it will change the way it idles sometimes

draining the tank would be good idea but i have a full tank of gas.....i have to get it running right to go burn up tha gas at the lake....
