Hopefully this will help someone in the future.

A while back I had to replace my in-tank fuel sending unit/fuel float. I took the old one out and verified that I had a 12 inch deep built in fuel tank. I drove down the road to a local marine store and purchased a replacement sending unit/float that was made for a 12 inch tank and resembled the old unit. I put the unit in and the fuel gauge read that I had about 1/2 a tank of gas when I turned the switch on and went to empty when turned off. I thought problem solved everything works and went on with life. Well it wasn't that easy.

Yesterday I decided to fill up my tank which is a 42 gallon tank. I drive to the marina and get 36 gallons of gas, as I crank the boat the gauge stays on empty. Crap! Today I pulled the wires off the sending unit and touched them together verifying that the gauge was working. I cleaned the already clean connections, still read empty. I pulled the sending unit/float arm out of the tank. I was thinking it may have either gone bad or maybe the float was not raising. I hooked the wires back up to the sending unit raised the float and it read empty. I then let the float drop and it read full. Crap again! It was installed upside down at the factory. Grind out the old rivets flip the float over and install new rivets. Reinstall the unit and now the fuel gauge reads full which is correct. I got to do the job twice even though it was someone else who messed up.
