Fuel sending unit wiring

Morning All,

I just installed a new fuel sending unit on my built in tank. I see that the red wire goes directly from the top of the sending unit screw to the sender connector on the gauge. Now the ground wire, does it run off the unit, split, then one end to a ground, and the other to the bulb connector on the guage?? Do I actually screw in a ground somewhere, or tap into an existing ground wire in the area? My directions for this are hazy at best. Also there is a grounding staple on the washer for the sending unit. Does it matter if the flat side of the staple is against the tank or flange of unit? My holes seem to line up better when the flat side of the staple is against the tank, but that way there doesnt seem to be a whole lot of contact against the flange. Ty each and all for your input.

It doesn't matter where you ground it, as long as it's grounded. It does not have to go all the way back to the gauge. You will ground the gauge G terminal to a common ground under the dash. As for the staple, any way that works the best and most secure is the way to go...

Re: Fuel sending unit wiring

Just finished doing the same thing to my boat. Attached a red wire to the sending post on the tempo sender to the sending terminal on the fuel gauge.

Ran a ground wire from the tank to the battery since it was close to the tank.
Find a ground under your dash to ground the gauge and pull a wire from the ignition to the bat terminal on your gauge. Didnt seem like it would work but it works like a charm.. You might want to switch the light on the gauge so its not on all the time.. I wired mine into the nav lights.. So when my bow light and stern lights are on my gauges are also lit up..

Hope this helps

Re: Fuel sending unit wiring

I have ground leads coming off my compass and cigarette lighter on the dash, so i may tie in the ground for the fuel sending unit there. So I will have the sender wire going straight to the sender post, then a ground wire going from the ground post on the sending unit towards the dash, split at the dash, I going to the ground already tied in at the cigarette lighter, the other lead going to the "bulb" post on the gauge. Ty all for your help.

I always put the flat side of the staple against the tank. My tank is grounded from a welded tab straight back to a negative bus. Oh and the lead from the gauge to the sender should be pink not red.
