fuel starvation

Was 15 min out with the motor running awsome at all speeds, Force 125, when all of a sudden it feels and sounds like where running out of gas. Just put 5 gals in I tell my buddy. The motor slows down and dies. We go for the primer bulb and it goes flat. I then pull the filter coming off the tank and it's half full. Should be full says my buddy. So I start messing with the primer bulb and the disconnect fitting, holding the center open with a screwdriver, and I get gas. Connect the fitting back to the motor and we are off! This last for about five minutes and the motor just gradually slows down and dies. We limp back to the boat ramp like this. The tank is built into the boat so I'm not sure whats going on inside. My buddy, who is a commercial fisherman, came along with me cuz it's the first time we had this boat in the water. He swears it's something to do with the tank or lines. He had a similar problem with his pleasure boat and he now runs with an external tank. I tend to agree with him since I am the one who fixed the problem while he went swimming in the bay. What do you guys think I should look at? I will replace the primer bulb tommorow and will probally get an external tank and new water filter.

:(

I think you're on the right track, NH3. I suspect that your tank is not vented properly, but it could also be your bulb, an antisiphon device in the tank, or your filter.
In any event you will almost surely run just fine on a portable.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Installed aux tank, new primer bulb, hoses, 3 way valve, removed disconnect fittings, installed see through inline filter & the motor ran flawless at all throttle positions.
Awsome on my 19' Bayliner.

Re: fuel starvation

Most important, since I feel this was the initial problem, I installed a new tank vent on the inboard tank. The old one was plugged solid. Also is it common for a 125 to eat gas? This motor is horrible on gas. Ate 6 gal in about an hour of moderate to heavy throttle. Sea trials ya know!
