Fuel still leaking out front of carbs with engine tilted up

Hey all
Just did carb kits on my 83 70hp Johnson 3 cyl.

Didn't use everything just the float and needle assembly.
And some washers. Didn't need the plugs not leaking from that location.
Can someone verify that these carbs don't have any kind of adjusting screws. All I see is a few Orifice plugs low and high speed. I thought there would be something to adjust for air fuel mixture , but I didn't see anything.
I was told by a service department that as far as setting the float I should invert the carb and make sure the float sits level. is this right? Because I am still leaking fuel out the front of the carbs when I bring the motor up. I do have a manual as well but it doesn't mention anything about setting screw. But it does mention the 1984 model has a different carb that has this adjustment. Mine is an 83.Guess I'm just looking for clarification. I would hate to think that after all that I will still stall during slow throttle up.

Thanks in advance

Rick

If it leaks some fuel and stops then that's pretty normal. If it keeps leaking then your gas tank vent is probably clogged or closed.

Disconnect the fuel line at the motor when you tilt it up....

This is what you're carb should look like. When inverted, the float should be level with the carb body as they said....

You should finish the rebuild, the float and needle valve alone will not solve the problem with stalling during slow throttle up. Make sure you change the seat for the needle valve as well, they work as a pair. Aso make sure you remove the welch plugs and clean all the passages thoroughly with carb cleaner and compressed air.
As Walker mentioned make sure the vent on the fuel tank is open and clear,if not the pressure buildup will force fuel thru the carb.

I made sure all floats were level with the body of the carb
The seat was changed as well. It comes with he kit
Thats the part you need a large flathead for. White washer. Correct???
The kit has it all together in one bag needle , seat small pin to hold the needle in place and a washer.
Haven't had it out on the lake since
I'll try it and let you know
Hey thanks for the help guys.
really great to know there's help out there when needed.

Later!

just an added note
I don't have #31 as per the schematic above.
I beleive that would be for the 1984 model.
Mines 83 no needles like that.
Maybe I'm wrong.
Just looks like an orifice plug behind #26 and that's it.

I would think that tilting the motor up with your carb would put even more pressure on the float valve. In other words, your float valves are not closing, tilted or not. It is probably not about the float, but rather, the valve itself.

You might want to examine the float valve needle, if you push it into the seat while adjusting the float you can easily damage it.

Re: Fuel still leaking out front of carbs with engine tilted up

Got the motor running doesn't seem to be ass much fuel leaking out the front of the carbs now, but I do notice what seems to be fuel mixed with probably exhaust that has a white milky look to it leaking out the front of the bottom carb. Can you guys verify what this might be.
Definite smells like gas. But not blue in color.
If my starter was faulty (brushes) it wouldn't matter if I had a fully charged battery. Correct?

Thanks in advance
Rick
