So I did the rebuild and remounted the carb. It started right up but only ran about a minute then as I tried to throttle up just a bit got a backfire and now I can't get it started again. Cranks but I'm not getting any spark now. Frustrating!

After cranking, can you pump the throttle and see gas squirt in the carb throat?
If no, then need to check fuel pump
If yes, then is the carb flooding the motor?

I just put a new fuel pump on the engine and confirmed that it was pumping to the carb by undoing the fitting and gas under pressure squirts out so I believe fuel is getting to the carb but I do not see any fuel squirting into the carb throat when I pump the throttle cable. I tried squirting some fuel into the carb but nothing happened. So then I put a test light between the coil and distributor cap but saw no spark light.

No fuel and putting some fuel down the carb does not cause the engine to fire. Things keep getting worst. See if you have 12V on the + side of the coil with key ON. If not, see if you kill switch is turned off

ok ..will do ..also I rebuilt the carb..carter /webber 9779s, but did not replace the accelerator pump. I believe its a 750 cfm carb but not sure . .. I was wondering if that's why I don't see a fuel spirt in the throat when I pump the throttle ..also ..I'm not familiar with the kill switch. Where would it typically
be located??. Thanks

The kill switch (as called man overboard) in most cases is part of the throttle/shifter. It has a lanyard attached to it, so if the driver falls overboard it kills the motor. In pic below you can see the switch to the bottom left of the control. If your not getting 12V it can be bypassed for testing.

If the accelerator pump is worn out it may have a lot of trouble pushing fuel, but even worn you should see something. If you have an electric fuel pump it could be a bad connect on it
