Fuel System Help!!!

OK Guys im a novice at these Outboards.....I have a 1998 Johnson 150 Fast Strike Carbed, the engine runs top great and top notch it just seems like the longer i've had it the worse fuel mileage its getting. I was wondering if there was a fuel filter and if so where is it located?? Or anyone know where i might find a diagram of the engine or any other help/ideas will be appreciated.

If you have a fuel filter, it will be obvious. If you don't, you need one, water seperating type, available here on iboats.

There are "screens" on the the engine fuel pump(s). Those just keep out the ":big stuff".

DO NOT let fuel destroy your engine. It will, in a big way.

Don't blame the engine, you have a good one. If you feed it garbage, it will return garbage performance.

If you want to "run out" the stuff in your tank-forget it.

Is a $10,000 engine worth $$$$ of fuel. You do the math.

Of course it could be other things causing your bad milage. A dinged up prop, old spark plugs, bottom of the boat is dirty causing drag or any number of things. What leads you to believe it's a fuel related problem when it runs top notch?? Pull the plugs after a good run and see what they look like...

if your engine is running as well as you say, start looking at the boat and operation. dirty bottom, has it ever been waxed. is the foam holding water. has the speed decreased. are you trimmed out effectively. are you running wot, rather than going to wot , and decreasing throttle, 7/8 throttle you may lose 2-3 mph , and gain 2 gallons. have you ever done a decarb?

SeaArk, The engine fuel filter (actually a screen) on my '98 OceanRunner 150HP V6 is under the airbox, in the aproximate center of the carbs. It has a white plastic knurled knob, with a fuel line in the center.

On a related note, I have been trying to find out the sililarities and differences between your motor and mine. Do you know your model number?

tashas, thanks for the reply i have thought about that but my boat is a 20' SeaArk Aluminum Bassboat....the bottom is still smooth with no rough spots or pits. The motor its still running the same RPM at WOT and pulling the same MPH, i've changed the plugs recently and had the tach verified at WOT and everything checks out fine. I pulled the Cowl off yesterday and looked around in the bilge where the fuel cell is located and didn't see any type of filter....I haven't ever touched the motor nothing has ever been taken apart/off the engine. Which from what some people have been saying there are screens on the carb for a semi-filter for bigger pieces.....this was leading me 2 believe these may be somewhat clogged with trash.

Thanks for the help Chris. I'll definately check that out and take apart and clean if necessary.....i don't have the model number handy if you know where its located on the engine let me know and i can get it off of it. Thanks for the reply.
