Ok. Here is the deal. I have a 1984 evinrude 90hp with the vro. I ran it two weeks ago and it ran excellent. I tried to start it yesterday and it would run. It was flooding out. I was told that it could be that the vro pump was bad. and pouring a bunch of fuel into the carbs. I replaced it with a diaphram pump. and have the same problems. my first question is it safe to run a diaphram type pump on this motor? I then tore the carbs down and the needle on the top carb was a bit shorter than the one on the lower carb. Is it possible that the needle is causing the flooding to occur? I also have a faulty choke solenoid. it doesnt click on when I his the choke, but has power to it? I am really stumped on this one. I have plenty of spark and compression, but my fuel system is messed up overnight. I hope that someone out there coudl give me some advice. Thanks

Re: fuel system problems

I assume that is the same needle that was in there when she was starting/running well. Does it make sense that it would suddenly cause trouble??

Go back to the parts that were working well, then troubleshoot using "Outboard won't start" in the Engine FAQs Forum.

Re: fuel system problems

The only parts that were replaced was the fuel pump. I am going to try replacing the needle today and see if it helps. If the choke solenoid was bad would it be dumping more fuel?

Re: fuel system problems

the fuel pump diaphram, would not cause flooding, the float needle causes flooding, as it does not seal the fuel flow when the carb is full. you probably have some crud in the system. cleaning and rebuilding carbs is a must.
