Hello
Just another silly question
I had some boat repairs and a old fuel tank was fitted.
The question is on the left side is a external inlet but with no cover or plug to stop fuel from coming out.
Can I use this rubber plug to seal inlet ???
Or will the rubber dissolve from the petrol ??
Pics attached
Thanks for your advice
Cheers Steve

In a word . . . NO

How is the tank vented? There should be a fitting or a cover plate. This does not sound safe at all.

Absolutely....NOT. The plug you show is for chairs, it will blow out in short order. The fitting is either a vent or something else. Perhaps it's for the fuel filler pipe.show us a pic of where it is.

The small line looks to be the fuel pickup for the engine. The fuel INLET cannot be sealed tightly as would be the case with the "chair tip" you intended to use. As fuel is drawn from the tank, air must be allowed in so there needs to be a vent line on the inlet. This appears to be a bomb waiting to go off.

The tank has to go, its designed to be vented thru the fill cap, and that is no-go in a boat. One spark and its gone

No Steve, No please. Get the proper vented tank for the boat. That rubber looks like a plumbing Fernco fitting, used for water not fuel. Boom!!!!! That Steve was a hell of a guy (Chap in the UK), cheap but one hell of a guy. At least the family didn't have to pay for a cremation.

First, this is an outboard boat from a post last year.

Second, a vented cap is OK for an outboard. We used vented caps until the EPA tanks/caps came on the scene.

Third, can you pull the tank out for some more pics? There is something funky about that port. It almost looks like a vent, but vents are on top of a tank. Can you read anything on the label?

I'm likely completely looking at this wrong but looking at the first picture of the tank. It looks like a small vent hole that the tube would connect to and vent to the side of the boat. There looks to be a filler hole with a gas cap, making it difficult to fill as you would have to fill from inside the boat? Not sure about the second set of pictures.

Ok, now tell me where I went wrong, lol. I'm not a mechanic, I'm an IT guy show me a computer and I'm good to go.

Rubber chair leg tip - probably not made from fuel-resistant material - used to plug a tank full of gasoline (and secured with a single band clamp, no less!)? What could go wrong?

From my vantage point...you're attempting to use a permanent mount tank as a portable tank correct? And as the permanent tank has a provision for filling above decks which you won't be using you're attempting to plug it off correct?

IF that's the case, I'd be selling off the current tank and get a correct portable tank for my specific application..The way you're attempting to block that inlet off is an accident waiting to happen. Given the right conditions...Big Badda Boom..

Where do you introduce fuel into that tank?

Yes, gasoline will dissolve that non-skid chair leg tip.

BTW, the new pics make it look more like a muffler now...

With the tube being 1.5 in (32mm) it may have been a fill line for a previous outboard. If this was the case then another iisue could be if it was over filled, the fuel would leak out the vent cap, unless its not a vented cap

I didn't do the 38mm conversion to inches, so a vent port sized at 1.49606" blew right past me.

It looks like a filler cap in the 2nd pic in the opening post, but now it's more confusing.
