I am new to this forum but I've read alot of great information prior to registering. I just purchased a very nice 5.5 Johnson motor (1956) with a dual line gas tank. The thumb primer leaks very slowly but just makes a little bit of a mess to be concerned. Is there anything I can do to stop the leak? Thanks for any help.

Re: Fuel tank

I have a Sea Horse Sailmaster 4, that appears to be by Johnson through OMC about 1985 or so. I would like to try to get it running, but have no fuel tank. Any idea of how to get one with the right line hook up for this engine?

First thing I would suggest is get rid of the dual line gas tank (big fire hazard) by installing a fuel pump on the motor. Easy modification (if your handy with basic tools) and it only cost me about $50.oo total including new motor mounted fuel pump, fuel line, motor mounted single fuel line connector ($3.00 at salvage yard) and bulb primer. You can still use the old dual line tank and just plug off the return line and you won't need the thumb primer. Been running my 59 Evinrude 18hp this way without any leaks or problems. Spend a little time reading to learn how to do this easy conversion:

Re: Fuel tank

I have invested in a tank rebuild kit and would like to use this tank. I have taken it apart numerous times now with no luck of pumping fuel to the motor. If someone could help me out with maybe some trick it would appreciated. Thank you

Re: Fuel tank

I have changed this diaphram so many times I have just about given up. I got so angry that I took the old diaphram put it back on the tank and got it to at least get the motor running again. The problem is I am back to square one, the thumb primer leaks again. If someone could give me some reason why it won't work with the new diaphram it would be very helpful. Thank you.
