Fuel turns yellowish

I have an older model 28 hp johnson and the carb has been rebuilt and I put in a new fuel system (tank, lines, primer) but I did not use marine fuel lines. I had some rubber hose lying around the yard and used that (it was unused). But when I try to start the motor, i check the color of the fuel and at some point from the tank to the motor it turns into a yellow/green and the engine will not fire. Is it the fuel line or something else?

Hot, you may be on to something. I've never used "some rubber hose lying around the yard".

Take a fuel sample in a clear glass jar. It sounds like water in the fuel

If you used the old rubber hose, where did you get the fuel from ?

Should we be sarcastic and run this new guy off since he's here looking for help, or should we be polite and helpful???

I still would really like to know where he got the fuel from due to the color of it.

Well, I know it may sound dumb to use the hose, but it was clean. Could the fuel be eating away at the hose and somehow turning it yellowish? The fuel is fine and still looks normal in the tank. And also, is it a problem that this yellowish fuel got into my carb? Im going tmrw to buy new fuel lines and carb cleaner. I really appreciate the responses guys. I'm not sure what phase separation is...is that when water gets into the gasoline?

Thanks guys

Oh and also, once I pump all of the bad (yellowish) fuel out of the lines, the good fuel starts flowing. But I still couldnt get the motor to run. Perhaps because I flooded it from trying to start it so many times before realizing something was up with the fuel.

Re: Fuel turns yellowish

yeah that could be it

phase seperation-water vapor from the air will bond with the ethanol in the gas and once the ethanol absorbs too much moisture it will seperate out into gasoline and oil and on the bottom of your tank there will be water and ethanol it only takes a couple of tables spoons of water to cause this so if your tank wasnt clean when you put the new fuel/oil in that may have caused it - if you run you motor with your fuel like this (if it will run at all)it WILL blow it up because you have no lube in the fuel

un hook your fuel line pull your spark plugs out and turn the engine over several times this will blow all the cruddy fuel out put your plugs back in check and make sure your fuel is clean and give it a go with the clean fuel mix

It still sounds like water to me. If so, you will have a carb full of water which could well be the reason for the engine not starting. Remove the lower orifice retaining screw, and see what drains out.

If the hose you found lying around isn't alcohol rated, you'll at least know where to look when that problem comes along. And it will ...

Ya, I got new hose from West Marine and it is the proper fuel line, but geez, it was like $3 a foot.
