fuel usage 4.3L

Hi all. I am installing a 4.3L in my 22' and also have to build and install a gas tank for same.

What I need info on is the hourly fuel consumption for the V6.I realize fuel consumption will vary from hull to hull etc. but I'm interested in the usage of the engine as if it was being bench tested. I think the fuel usage of a given engine can be calculated by volume x RPM but not sure.

Regardless, if anyone has some information on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

prawner

if your more exact about the boat you may get better feed back

in general a 4.3 is a small motor for a 22ft boat i dont think any current 22 ft is even sold with anything smaller than a 5.0

tommays

My 4.3LX burns from about 1gal.@hr, to 10gal.@hr........
Depending where the Throttle is set............

You're asking a Wide Open Question, with No Real Answer..............

The only tip I've got is,
Install the Largest Tank you can fit....(you don't have to fill it, but if you Need it, it's There)
And,
Two Tanks are better than 1...........

Re: fuel usage 4.3L

Thanks guys. Sorry if I was vague. The boat weighs approx. 5000 lbs. I'm not sure what the cruising rpm is for the V6. I was looking for a ballpark figure for volume times rpm rather than a specific usage for a given hull. Thanks.

P.S. The V6 is efi, and I agree Bondo, bigger is better, but space is limited.

Re: fuel usage 4.3L

It is quite an open question and even if are quite specific on details, the answer can still vary.

Data for your ballpark guess. In my 23ft Bayliner Trophy, 5.7L Merc, 50gal on board, 3 people, minimal gear, I get about 1.8 miles/gal at 28mph (not knots), this is 15 gals per hour. Range with a full tank of 95gal is 171 miles - best case.

Go with Bondo's suggestion, give it everything you got, with split tanks, you can position them into the odd spaces to gain more.

An underpowered boat can burn more fuel than one with an overpowereed (not extremely overpowered) boat for reasons of not being able to achieve optimum plane or taking a long time to get onto plane. The drag is extremely high during the hump getting onto plane.

I have come across an owner claiming significantly better fuel consumption after replacing their 150hp outboards with a 200hp. With 2 strokes, the losses from a larger engine are even higher, yet he still achieved better mileage. With 4 strokes it will be better.

Hull size/shape/weight/weight distribution/cruising speed have much much greater effect than the engine. Cruising speed is the user controllable item and has the greatest effect. Mathematically, it varies as a square of speed. You get about 4 times the fuel burn if you double the speed and 16 times for a 4 fold increase in speed (all are on plane conditions)

An engine on the bench with no load only needs to overcome its own friction and losses, bigger the engine larger the losses and equates to poorer performance by bigger engines. Not so when running under load.

Between an adquately powered boat and an overpowered boat, the overpowered boat will be worse. Between an underpowered boat and overpowered boat, the underpowered boat is worse.

Re: fuel usage 4.3L

Yes I can see that there are a lot of variables to consider. I was just looking for a starting point for usage so I can determine if 35 gallon single tank would be enough.
That's the original size that came with a 302 merc of around 180 hp.It was tired but did approximately 20 mph and 10 mpg. The V6 is fuel injected with a duoprop and is rated at 225 hp.
I was hoping the extra horses would speed me up and extend my range. Sorry for long post!

Prawner,

I have a 30 Gallon tank in a 19ft Regal Sports Boat 2500Lb? with a 4.3 engine Carb with single prop. I tend to go 12 miles on around 1/2 tank at 3500 rpm around 40mph with 4 adults and tubes etc. I cant be sure its exactly 1/2 tank as the guage is never to sure of its position! The duo prop should give you both a performance and an efficency boost and fuel injection over carb should be more efficient. You could install flow metres to get your exact consumption figures but I appreciate thats after the event but perhaps you could rig a tank up first, find your exact figures and then install the tank later.

Re: fuel usage 4.3L

My 19 ft bluewater cuddy has a 4.3 4bbl and had a 35 gallon tank. I could run about 55-60 miles on one tank and have a little left(2-3 gallons) if I keep rpm around 3200.

Re: fuel usage 4.3L

i dont know any formula but i have read up a lot recently just to try and find out what my 20ft 2500lb 3.0L boat would/should do per gallon.. assuming the boats on plane mine should do about 4 miles per gallon.. there are only two speed to go at.. no-wake speed or planing speed.. anything in between is wasting fuel.. mine planes about twenty mph minimum.. cruising at 24 mph 3200 rpm uses about six gallons an hour.. maxed out at 40 mph 4800 rpm it uses about ten gallons an hour.. both kinda work out at roughly that 4 mile per gallon figure..

at a no wake speed of say 5/6 mph 1000/1100 rpm just less than one gallon per hour still around that 4 mile per gallon figure..

i recon your 22ft boat at 5000lbs would use roughly twice as much gas as mine does.. say about 2 miles per gallon.. unless i missread your post the figure u quoted with a tired engine of ten miles per gallon seems way to high..

trog100

Re: fuel usage 4.3L

It is good to hear those numbers. I realize there is quite a difference between our hulls but it sounds encouraging. I know of someone that has a 4.3 in a 24' Reinell and is quite happy with it.Haven't had a chance to talk to him about it yet ,but will soon.

Trog, You're right. The 10 mpg with 302 was a typo. It should have been about 10 gallons per hour. That worked out to about 2mpg

If I could get 4mpg I would be a happy camper.
Perhaps I expect too much of the V6 for the weight of my hull, but the horsepower rating is higher than what I had so I figured all would be well.

It looks like I'll have to take Bondo's advice and fit in a couple of saddle tanks to extend my range.

Keep the info coming. It is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,Bill

I have a 3000 lb, 20ft bowrider with 4.3L (2001, TBI, 210HP) and average about 5-6 gph. Just depends on what I'm doing and the number of people on board.

I recently took a river cruise at about 3200 rpm with 4 adults and 4 kids and burned about 22 gallons in 80 miles. I have a 38 gallon tank.
