Is it common to have a separator on an outboard. I have been told that they do not work on outboards.

I have had water get in my fuel twice now, causing major headaches. I was hoping this might help with this problem.

Is it done?
How is it done?

Does anyone recommend a brand?

thanks

Re: fuel/water separator

You may use a water seperator on an outboard, but you need to use one that is rated for the gal/hour that your motor uses. Typical water seperators will state they either are or are not suitable for outboard use.

I installed one on my 150HP Ocean Runner. It works just fine.

I've always used the canister type on my boats with outboards and never had a problem...

Which side of the primer bulb should a separator be installed?

What is the effect of a fuel/water separator when ethanol added fuel is used? If the water is bound to the ethanol will that get trapped or passed through?

Tank->separator->primer bulb->fuel pump.

Ethanol will bond to some of the water, but if you've got open vents in a marine environment you'll quickly saturate any ethanol holding capacity.
