My boat did not come with one from the factory, 1995 Sunbird . Currently I'm running a 10 Micron inline filter. No issues.

Am I flirting with the devil ?

Who runs a fuel water separator on these older carbed outboards?

This is the filter ive ran this year

If internal fuel tank is well sealed, moisture is not allowed, use fresh fuel bought at a gas station that has good fuel water separator filters should be OK Large internal fuel tanks should develop more issues compared to portable ones.

This does not look like a safe filter to use, its plastic and should be metal

Don't know of anyone personally using the canister type, but there has been several on this site which have installed them here on iboats. There used on all the outboards these days

a fuel water separating filter does just that.
If you can get moisture in your fuel, or if there is a chance that water was in the gas when you purchased it, it is a good idea.

I have one on my fishing boat with 2 outboards.

I do not have one in my jon boat.

This type is not safe for an I/O or inboard, but it is perfectly acceptable and safe for an outboard.

jwall - if you have a built-in tank, a water separator/filter is a good idea. You can use either of these types - Metal can or the see-thru. ;

If you look on this product page, you will see the see-thru's are only for outboards.

Would you say it's a must have a installed fuel water filter separator no matter if it's a built in or portable fuel tank for OB use ? Or will depend entirely if you comsume most of the fuel bought for that outing and the gas station you bought fuel from as could be buying impeccable well filtered fuel or fuel along water at a gas station.

Assume that on large built in tanks it's a must have one specially if fuel will be sitting for long time periods as opposed to portable tanks which contains at the most 6 gallons and are consumed faster.

Will be installing one soon!

Anyone use the composite head ones? Are they acceptable?
