Hi I just purchased a 2003 165 Aquasport Ospery w/ a 50 Johnson. The boat currently does not have a fuel/water seperator with a see though bowl. I am upgrading to the bowl style filter. Should I bypass the older fuel/water seperator? If so is the fuel line pressurized?

Thanks

Re: Fuel/Water Seperator

The fuel line is only pressurized initially after squeezing the primer bulb. After the engine starts, fuel is drawn through the fuel line. You should not run two filters as the fuel pump may not be able to draw through two. But why bother with the change.

Why not just Remove the old filter and Add the new one. Open the throttle to relieve any fuel pressure., But you still may get some fuel when you crack the lines open so be ready for a little fuel from the lines.

Do not use a water/fuel separater with a see through bottom and a drain/petcock on the bottom.
The way I understand it they are for "diesel only" in a marine enviroment.

They're for outboard engines only. Inboard requires the metal bowl version.

I use the oil filter style water seperators. They last me a whole season, and I just toss them out. They are cheaper to initially purchase have less seals then the see-thru type, the replacement elements are cheaper, and I really have no interest in looking at the dirt.

Also, you can remove and dump them into a clear container, if you suspect water in the fuel, and then reinstall them.

You see them installed on boats with a diesel engine's
(hey sea bob whats the rule for this one????)
From what I have been told it is the volatility of gas leaking as compared to diesel that makes the difference.

I wanted to install them, but the marine survey guy that did my boat 2 weeks ago said not to as it was illegal ?????
I would like clarification for my own self.

I agree with Chris except I heard that you shouldn't dump and reuse them; you end up mixing good with bad that then moves on to the motor.

I use the big blue yamaha's.

I also carry an extra one in a zip lock, and a filter wrench. If the one that's hooked up gets funky when I'm out, as they will do, I can spin off the old one in the zip-lock (to dump later) and spin on the new one.

Diesels may have a clear bowl, but it must have a "flame shield" surrounding it on the underside. Gas? Must be metal on I/Bs and I/Os...

Get rid of the old, put a new Racor in there with a see-through bowl...

And BTW, check out Classic Aquasport...

In my opinion one of the best layed-up hulls of it's type on the market....No stock in AS.
