Full throttle issue....

My 35hp Evinrude doesn't want to run at full throttle. It will run fine anywhere up to 1/2 throttle, but when you get above 1/2 throttle, it runs for 10-20 seconds (depending on amount of throttle given) then dies. I just re-built the carb, but i have run a lot of gas (about 50 gal) through it, and not used the best oil sometimes, could that have caused this? Might a fuel pump be the cause also? Thanks in advance!

Did you ever get your problem figured out? I have a 40 hp evinrude, and it dies at full throttle. It seems to run ok until I try to give it all the power, then it just dies. I cleaned the carb, looks like new inside. Could this be a bad coil, points, or what?

1. Make sure the fuel tank is vented.
2. See if you can keep it running by pumping the primer bulb when it starts to die. If so, repair or replace the fuel pump.
3. Rebuild the other carb (kidding)

Re: Full throttle issue....

That is caused by not getting gas into the carburetor as fast as it is being sucked out. It's a fuel pump problem, or clogged filter, or air leak in the hose assy/fuel connectors, or clogged screen in the tank, or,or,or. Oh, it could be the housing on the top of OEM tanks. There's a tiny o-ring around those little pins that are pushed in when you attach the hose. If that o-ring leaks, it will suck air there. You could have also installed the wrong float needle & seat (too small) when you rebuilt the carburetor.

See if you can get your hands on a fuel pump pressure guage. Insert it in the hose between the fuel pump and carburetor. It should maintain 4+/- psi fuel pressure.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm pretty sure i installed a correct float/needle because it ran great. My guess is it's the fuel pump. I'll be sure to let everyone know what the problem was when i get it fixed!

Xcuseme- a couple times i've needed gas and had to use 2 cycle oil from a gas station, not really "name brand" oil, like a conoco brand or something.

Yeh buy a $40 carb kit and replace all the gaskets and the diahprams and you should be in good shape.

I just re-built the carb about a month ago, and it has run through about 50 gallons of gas since without a hitch.

Oh, and i just got done re-building te fuel pump, and it's still running rough. It is idling rough, and can't go full throttle without dying. I've also added seafoam to the fuel.

I Have the same problem with a 1988 20 HP Johnson. I considered a air leak and also considered a full pump problem but I'm not sure if their is a fuel pump on this engin. I just recently purchased a manual.
