Re: Function of water control valve?

My caps must have been changed as the are just plain plates, no water connections, that bolt onto the heads (I notice that they are unpainted aluminum whereas the rest of the motor is black). The water valve has three connections to it. One from the top, port side of the block (just to the left of the regulator, now re-routed), the adapter plate and the output to the **** tube. Could it be that the '86 had two versions?

Also I am confused about the difference between a thermostat and a vernatherm, can someone explain.

Yep, somebody already did it for you. Your good to go!

Right at the top of the head where it meets the block, look at the tab part of the head gasket. It'll be stickin up in the center. Is that tab straight across or is there a notch cut in it?

You mean this..... I don't think the heads have been off as the gasket edge is painted black, just like the rest. what is the significance of the streight or notched tab? By 'I'm good to go' do you mean I can leave the water valve bypassed?

Yep, you can leave the valve as is. I would remove it just to clean up the looks a bit but its OK as is.

That pic is a bit blurry -- most likey this 1902 model computer, not your pic -- but the tab looks straight across. that just means the powerhead is the 3.500" bore which was correct for that year. I was thinking someone may have updated to a big bore like the 1988 model. No big deal, I was just curious. It should be an excellent running motor.
