So, since I figure some of you will get a chuckle out of this - I figured I would tell you of an amusing incident that happened to me today.

I have a 2002 40 hp Merc. I have had a leak in my lower unit somewhere. I have tried to figure out where several times but have come out empty. So today I decided to hook up the air compressor and shoot some compressed air in the fill whole for the lower unit oil after spraying all the seals etc with soapy water. I noticed the boot around the shift shaft kept flaring out but figured it would be fine since I couldn't get that good of a seal around the fill screw. As my buddy and I were looking for bubbles, the entire shift shaft shot out of the lower unit and went about 15 yards away.

Guess I was getting a little more pressure in that lower unit than I thought!

that is funny..i think 7-10 psi is where you pressure test a LU. since you got it out order new seals and replace them all..and new seals around the fill screws....wish you had video of the javelin throw..glad it didn't impale your dog..LOL

Good thing you weren't pressure testing a tube on a pontoon. Shrapnel would have been sent into the next county.
