could use a little more help tracking a solenoid/ starter problem. I used the troubleshooting the starting system by Don S. I have a 2004 mercruiser 3.0 I/O. I'm okay to the slave solenoid since I hear it clicking. Putting a test lite on the slave solenoid, Clip to ground, tip to terminal A . lite does not come on. I jumped A to B and it clicked only. tried with ignition both off and on. Do I need to go any further and just replace the slave solenoid??? i'm not getting any connection on any terminal I test. (yes, my lite is working) thanks, Tony

Did you verify that your test light was connected to a good ground?

If so, it sounds like you need to check your cable connections at the battery. Are they clean and tight?

battery is new, cleaned connections with emery cloth. I found the best ground I could reach with the test lite. ground wire is about 15". I'll double check. If its the slave solenoid, How do I identify the part since there are many to pick from. It appears to go by part # and I don't see it on mine. thanks, tony

Ayuh,....

The Ultimate Test of a solenoid is quite Simple....

Take a set of Jumper Cables,.....
Take 1 of the Positive cable clamps,+ attach it to 1 of the BIG lugs on the solenoid,.....
Then take the other Positive cable clamp,+ attach it to the other BIG lug on the solenoid.....
The solenoid has now been eliminated from the circuit....

Now,.... Try to start the motor,...
Does it Start,..?? If so, replace the solenoid....
If Not,... Move on to your next link in the circuit......

Btw,.......
Why have you started a 2nd thread about the Exact Same Problem,..??..??
While your original thread is still playing on page 1,..????

Duplicate Threads are frowned upon around here,...
It's confusing enough for the regular posters to keep track of Helping you guys out,...
Without running 2 threads about the Exact Same Problem on the Exact Same boat......

If you have more questions,+ need more answers,..
You should be posting on the 1st thread to bring it to the top,+ keeping All the pertinent Info together.....

Good Luck.....:)

If you don't have power to A then it's not going to work. That power is there anytime the battery switch is on.

Look down on the starter solenoid and look for a square shaped fuse on the main battery terminal.

Check power coming out of the block. If no power, you need a new fuse.
If you need a new fuse, did you spark something down there while working on something else??????

PS, follow Bondo's advise about the double posts. I will close the other one, since this one had the most usable information.

I may have sparked something while charging the battery. I'll check the fuse this morning. Tony

Re: further help ,starter not turning

I made a test lite with a long ground lead and clamped to the ground buss bar with different results. Slave solenoid, terminal A is hot, terminal B, lite come on turning iginition switch. I think this eliminates the slave solenoid.

The box fuse on the starter solenoid has power before and after. (this is a strange looking fuse and hoped I checked it properly).

Starter solenoid, touched terminal B and did not lite. I assume I'm down to the starter itself. Any ideas on the cost of one. I looked at some but could not tell without the part #. Its not in my manual. Is it on the starter itself? Thanks for you patience and help. Tony

Starter solenoid, touched terminal B and did not lite.
Did you try it when you turned the ign. switch to the start position???? If you did and it doesn't light, then that means the wire from the slave solenoid to the starter solenoid is bad.
If it ligths and nothing happens, then you have a starer problem.

Don, I went back to the starter solenoid and retested and could not get any lite. (ign, switch off or on) check the wire from the slave to starter solenoid and had continuity. Does this indicate failure to at least the starter solenoid and possible to include the starter ?? Thanks Tony

Re: further help ,starter not turning

You have to turn the switch to the START position for that wire to have power.
