Works great, lasts long time: (PIC) Motor is an F90 Yamaha. The small fuse holder to the right of the 200 amp breaker is for the on-board battery charger.

Yes! You have a very nicely installed 200 amp breaker in the battery cable that gives you a Sense of Security and no problems. (And I honestly mean that in the nicest way.) :) But it misses the point.

A 90HP motor initially draw a few hundred amps (~500?) for a few milliseconds while the starter comes up to speed and then draws less than 200 amps while cranking normally. The breaker does not trip.

Your cables (4awg?) are continuously rated for 70 amp at 60?C (140?F), with a MAX Rating of 95 AMPS at 90?C (194?F) if you purchased it with high temperature insulation.
In either case, if the circuit were ever to draw 190 amps for any period of time, the wire would go up in smoke and the breaker would not trip. The breaker is there, but it is not protecting the wire! :blue:

Actually, they are 2awg 105c boat cable good for 210 amps.

I'm not saying everybody should run out and fuse their battery cables, but what I have works and I think it is better than nothing.

There is a very good reason why you never want to fuse/breaker your battery cable that leads to your starter. Imagine you are in a critical situation and your engine stalls. You go to start your engine and your breaker pops!

No thanks.

There is a reason it isn't required or wanted for a reason.

Circuit protection (fuses, CB's) are good ways to prevent fires. I don't know about you, but I call a fire a critical situation.

Over half of boat fires are caused by electrical wiring:

If ABYC thought it was an issue, it would be in their standards...it isn't.

And lets not forget every car manufacturer as well. And while we are add it, lets throw in heavy equipment, off road, industrial. Nothing uses a fuse/breaker on the main battery cable. There is no reason to as long as the cables are routed in a smart/structured way, and are supported along their intended route. And to add to that, 90% of boats are not even conductive. So even if the cable chaffed and grounded out (which would be the concern with cars), nothing would happen.
