Fuse for main power wire

The other day I accidently bridged the main power wire that runs to the dash to ground on my 67 OMC Sportsman. I've now got a short somewhere. In the process of tracking down the short it dawned on me that there's no fuse on the main power line off the battery. I don't know if there ever was one but I'd like to add one.

Anyone know what amp fuse I should be running for this?

Would proper placement be between the battery and starter?

Chevy 153 inline 4 (120hp)

The wiring I'm finding for the OMC shows a 50 fuse, headed to the helm. Once there their is normally a 20 amp fuse which feeds the ignition. This is for a V8 but the basics should be the same
