What advice would you’ll give a young man in his early teens (my son) whom has a mechanical gift and would like to make a living in the marine industry. I know there are many of you that have been down this road in the past, I would appreciate any advice you have for him.

I think the best thing for your son, at this time, would be for him to get a job working at a local marina or boat dealer. It would be pretty much scut work, but he'd be exposed to the environment.

The kids that work as go-fers and the like in shops tend to get a lot of learning from the pros that work there.

That way, he'll be able to decide whether a career in this business suits his needs.

A good marine trade school would be my guess. Our son never had a problem getting a job after attending an auto tech school. The military gives excellant training also.

Never thought I would be giving this kind of advice but things change, Consider an A/P school. Good all around training in theory of maintenance on recip. engines although air cooled. Get the license and you can choose between auto/aircraft/marine. Will also have to go thru jet maint. although that is pretty limited to r&r accessories. DAMN, wish i was young again making these decisions. Good luck to your son in his endivors, FRED

tommays,

When I suggested a local shop for experience, it was because the boy is a "young teenager" according to monoshock. Trade schools are great, but he sounds too young to go at this point.

Being a gofer in a local marine service place is a great deal for a young kid still in high school.
