But where to go that has the boating opportunities that I have now? I can be on the Sac river in .5 hours, on SF bay in 1.5 hours, on Lake Tahoe in 2 hours, or Lake Shasta in 3. And dozens of smaller lakes withing a 50 mile range.

States I like the most (in no particular order):

Idaho
Wyoming
Montana
Texas

What is the boating situation?...gonna post a poll. Chime in with alternates!

Well, Arizona is the best state for fresh water boating in the country.

Just sayin'

I voted Idaho, but I'm kinda with DR . . . 'cept I can invade AZ from CA . . .

Coeur d'Alene is pretty cool plus you got the Spokane River and some other decent boating not too far way.

I say somewhere up north so you can share in our misery of "end of boating season" and "winterizing" year in and year out! I'm thinking about northwestern Georgia myself.

Arizona!

While this certainly is not boating Mecca, it does offer some wonderful boating-year around.

We have: boating, skiing (snow and water), hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and incredible views.

Ya, it gets a bit hot but you can escape it. Plus, we have the BEST roads in the country.

Upstate SC has:

Lake Hartwell--
Lake Russell
Lake Keowee
Lake Jocassee

All within 20 miles of each other

Ha. Yeah, I can tell folks in hard-freeze areas take "end of season" a bit more serious than we do. We can have 75 degree days in December one week, and 40's the next. I can take dry heat (Hadn't thought of AZ...but will now), and love the culture of the South (I'd fit right in...more Sporting Clays courses than I could ever dream of in CA)...but not sure I'd ever adjust to the humidity.

Ya, but I tell people that is nothing different than "sticking your head in the oven".

So what, we drive with "Oven Mits".:p:D

In all seriousness, the state has a lot to offer. The myriad of venues isn't really found anywhere else. Taxes are cheap and the state caters to the "outdoors type".

The east coast of Mass., Cape Ann is the place to be. No matter where you live here, you are no more then ten minutes to some of the best salt water fishing on the east coast from April to October, or fishing the lakes, ponds and rivers from here to Maine. From November thru April you can be skiing in two and a half hours, leave at 6 AM and be skiing by 8:30 AM

No tornados, earth quakes or flooding and very, very few hurricanes.

First off congratulations on leaving CA. that is the WORST state in the union.

Don't get me wrong it;s beautiful and has lots of great stuff to do.. but the government there is the WORST. regulations up the Yin Yang.. BS everywhere.

I left 6 years ago. while the market was good. and bought a house in southern Utah. The weather is great. (a little hot but dry) we have 3 lakes within 10 miles of us. and even more if you want to drive.

and the stupid government is pretty good here. (gun laws smog laws and more..) the people here are alittle on the dumb side and great food is hard to find. but all in all its worth it.

You make your food sound like it is worst then Vermont. A few years back ordered a roast turkey dinner, cost 14.99, you would expect real turkey, it was deli turkey sandwich meat. eck

OREGON

Portland is on the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. Two hours from Lake Merwin and others in the Mt St Helens foothills. Less than two hours from the Pacific Ocean. Along with high desert within 2 hours, skiing 365 days a year on My Hood (only place in the Continental US), hiking/biking everywhere, decent cultural aspect in the city. Average winter sees no more than 2 weeks of freezing temps. Average summer sees less than 2 weeks of 90+. Rain is not as bad as Seattle, and average annual rainfall is less than Tampa Bay Metro, FL. With the relatively mild winters, the boating season can be extended.

I lived there for 17 years, and still wonder why I left.

Oh, and I lived in Idaho (Sandpoint) for a few years before that. Short summers, long winters. IMHO, not a boater's paradise.

But you'll need chains for the prop due to all the snow

Sorry PW2 but:

No thanks. I was born there and lived there for 24 years.

On Labor day, they shut off the lights and it is grey and dark grey until Memorial Day.

How do you tell it's Monday in Michigan? It's NOT raining and cold!

Typical Summer Michigan Weather is:

Monday-Bright Sunshine, warm.

Tuesday-Same.

Wednesday-Same.

Thursday-A bit of wind but not bad.

Friday-Same as Thursday but something is brewing.

Saturday-DRIZZLE-Temp dropped 20*

Sunday-Same until 5:00 PM-Weather clears out.

Repeat.

I'm being a bit harsh but that's the way I remember it.

Re: Gah...Time to leave CA

I guess you have it narrowed down to The United States :D Best of luck wherever you end up, but a week or two visit is a whole lot different than living there. When you find the perfect place, let me know. In the meantime, I'm pretty content
