I have a 5D11 Gale which I believe is the only 5hp full gearshift using the old style primer carb.I have operated other OMC motors with similar setups,no problem.Don't have mine running yet but curious::
Does anyone have first hand experience with the 5D11 type and 5D12 new style carb performance.Specs seem to be very close and 5hp should be 5 hp.
But the induction setup is much more sofisticated on the 5D12 type.
Anyone ever note any performance differences?

Well I've serviced a ton of both kinds, but don't have the on-the-water experience you are talking about. But I just want to say that you are comparing two entirely different motor designs. The primer carb was used on the old style powerhead. The powerhead was totally redesigned at the same time that the new carburetor came along. Actually, the exhaust housing was also redesigned. So any performance differences can't be attributed entirely to the carburetor.

My guess is a slightly more efficient use of fuel.Ever so slightly less wasted fuel being flushed into the waters.
Just checked my 57 Gale service manual all the 5s are rated approximately .8 to .9 gph at wot. the 12s at approximately 2gph.@ wot.
Apparently about twice what our 1970s,80s,90s,use today.

Undoubtedly more due to the porting in the engine itself more then the carb, same deal with model airplane engines, an old McCoy 0.35 sucks fuel like it is going out of style but a new OS 0.32sx sips it down by comparison and produces a lot more power.
