I have a 35HP '59 Super sea horse without electric start. Thinking about buying this other motor which is a '60 Gale 35HP with electric start and controls. Would these be very similar engines? Can the parts interchange?

also this ad says long shaft, not sure if mine is a long shaft or not. It looks the same length from the photos. What would happen if you run a long shaft on a fiberglass boat that had a short shaft? I was thinking it'd be ok just not the other way around . (short shaft with a long shaft transom.) Come to think of it how can I tell which my boat takes? I always assumed that it'd work just fine (the Johnson ) with my boat because it was on there when I got it.

Think GM and Chevy, Buick, Pontiac, etc. when you think of Gale and OMC/Johnson/Evinrude. They could be similar...depending on years made. Some parts may interchange...depends on year models. Most short transoms are made for short shaft outboards (19 inches)...measure from where motor rests on transom to bottom of the skeg. Long shaft motors...length varies...are made for boats with 20-inch or deeper transoms. Long shaft motor on short transom will work...just less top speed, maybe doggy/slower on turns. Other way around and you get cavitation...prop loses bite in the water. Not so good.

78white, look at your motor. If it is a long shaft, there will be a 5 inch extension between the lower unit and where it bolts up to the midsection. If it is short shaft, there will be no 5 inch piece. Short shaft motors are for 15 inch transoms, long shaft are for 20 inch transoms. Most builders make the transom a bit longer than those figures, but it is like an inch or so at the most. A short shaft motor will not work at all on a long transom. A long shaft motor will sort of work on a short transom, but with terrible performance and lots of spray...in other words, it won't work either.

1959 (and some 1958) was a year of big changes for OMC. The Gale Buccaneer did not get those changes. What that means is that while there might be a few parts that will work on yours, most of them won't. The electric starter should work.
