Gale Bucaneer 15 HP thrust problem?

I have a 1963 Gale Bucaneer 15 hp motor that runs great. However in my last outing, it sliped into a neutral mode when it is cruising along. As you let off on the throttle it re engages until you give it more throttle. If you keep the rpm's low it purrs along nicely. Is this related to lower unit oil levels or something more serious?
Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome.

I believe you should post this in the Other Outboard forum.

That's not an IO carey, moving to "Other Outboard Brands" forum.

Does it make a thunk/whump sound when it kicks out of gear? If so, time for a new clutch dog.

That is definatly a lower unit problem, ()clutch dog()

This can happen with with time, wear and tear.
But mostly it's because the operator shifts the leaver to slow allowing the clutch dog to wear prematurly.
Proper shifting is slow down the motor almost before stalling and shift quickly.

Best thing is to find a parts motor or another lower unit, if you also detect exessive water mixed with the gear oil. Now would also be a good time to replace your seals as well.

Good luck.

If it jumps and bangs when it happens, it is a clutch dog. However, it if merely slips like spinning your wheels on the ice, it is a propeller hub. Don't jump to conclusions and fix the wrong thing.

Sure sounds like a spun hub,If no clunk.
A prop shop should be able to repair.
