Gale Sovereign 40hp ID

Hi all, I just picked up a Gale 40hp for a possible lower end donor for my '63 40hp Evinrude. When I got it home I realized that the shift linkage access port is on the opposite side of the tower. Is this is a 'year change' thing or a model distinction? Also need help identifying the year, the numbers are...40DE17B, S/N-8852xx. I think I've narrowed it down to between 1960 and '64, because it's a 40hp bigtwin and the fuel mixture is still 24:1 on the inside of the engine cover. Much Thanks for any help.

It's a 1963 40hp.
I'm pretty sure the Gale lower unit will not fit. Gales were not exactly the same as the Johnson/Evinrudes. Although they share many common parts they are not identical.

Thanks for the quick reply, just my luck, I accidentally hit the exact same year motor, and it's different...oh well I may be able to get the Gale running...

The Gale is more similar to the 33hp Johnson, but with a 40hp powerhead (bigger pistons). That is why stuff won't interchange---it's a very different motor. FYI, the 1971-up 40hp Johnson & Evinrude motors are reincarnations of the '63 Gale 40. What comes around goes around.

Thanks, that's good information as I usually don't look at engines newer than the 60's...I noticed that the Gale looked more like my 1955 bigtwin...
