Re: Gamefisher 15hp DIY CDI repair

Thanks for the insperation to try repairing my CDI. I cut into the trigger coil group with a hacksaw and broke away the epoxy with a screwdriver. I replaced the capacitor with a 250volt 1mf capacitor from Radio Shack and I had spark!! Took it out fishing this morning and it ran great for over an hour total. Still need to seal it from moisture. What did you use for sealing?

gmfsh congratulations!! but please keep the epoxy away and never put it in the oven .... the acid in the epoxy is corrosive to tin and copper unless other wise marked and labled for electrical use.
You may also want back in there some day.

For sealant I use E6000 craft glue to cover the circuit and then let to cured and topped off by as many coats of liquid electricians tape as needed to make it all pretty and sealed, and 2 days to cure. I just layed it on arond the cap for about three days until it all looked smooth.

E-6000 is not formulated for exposure to sunlight. Thats why we want to cover it with liquid electricians tape, the hole the cap goes in does not need any glue, just fill it with the liquid tape.

any craft store will have it.

What E-6000 can do: E-6000 will adhere to many plastics, wood, metal, ceramic, glass, fiberglass, cement, fabric, rubber, and paper. The bond created remains flexible. When fully cured it's acid-free, making it suitable for use in scrapbooking, including gluing photographs. After curing, it's non-flammable, stable within a temperature range of -40 to +150 degrees F, and can - believe it or not - withstand both washing and drying. It's also self-leveling, making it excellent for use in filling holes. It can be painted after it's cured.

edit: Q: honey why does the pizza taste like chemicals?, A: Oh ah...I baked a epoxy pie in there last night sweety, Q: can I go play hockey tonight with my new epoxy puck, eh?... sweety A: NO!

I don't understand the problem here - Why, just last night I baked up a nice electrolytic casserole, with a crunchy conformal coated passive component topping. I got rave reviews from The Woman, and she got sparks shooting from her eyes.

Re: Gamefisher 15hp DIY CDI repair

I just finished up and test fired my 15hp Gamefisher project, The solid state ignition was dead when I was given this outboard a few months ago, I replaced the originnal 250v 1 mf capacitors with 400v 1 mf caps and she runs like new. Now just to re seal the lower unit and take it to the river...Oh joy!

mrscrubs................i want to do this to my engine as i lost only one clyinder. is it possible to get a pic if its not a bother i got a capacitor as you sates and removed the material i just dont know which terminals to solder it too?

Re: Gamefisher 15hp DIY CDI repair

Does anyone know a good source for similar ignition wires that lead to the CDI? Insulation on my 86 15hp CDI wires is pretty cracked up and if I am going to fix the CDI, I might as well fix this while I am at it. Could actually be the root of my problem.
