Hi guys, never owned or worked on an outboard, but I just borrowed a 3.0 gamefisher from a neighbor of mine to use on a friends 12' jon boat  Anyway, the motor was in storage for an unkown amount of time. I did basic stuff like clean the carb, derust and paint the throttle pole and lube the throttle cable, sprayed some wd-40 through the spark hole and got a new spark plug etc. and it fired right up

Here's my problem. I put some 85w-140 gear oil (I assume this was what to use?) in the 'lower unit' and the next morning I come to find a decent amount had leaked from the lower unit onto the floor. I figure what it needs is a new gasket. from reading this forum I learned that www.searspartsdirect.com is the place to go so I entered the model numer and voila... Model 3.0HP OUTBOARD MOTOR - 298586192 (FIG. 6 DRIVE SHAFT PIPE & GEAR CASE) However, I'm not sure what part it is. I think it's probably a GEAR CASE GASKET, or an OIL SEAL or a DRAIN GASKET? I don't have a manual to go off of...any help?

1 more thing, I put 32:1 pre-mix in it but I just read in another post that JB recommends 20:1 for an air cooled engine. should I add a little more oil to whats in the tank and run a 20:1 mix from now on? doesn't adding more oil cause a leaner fuel mixture? is this ok cause these are low compression motors? should I use like an 89 octane gas with 20:1?

Re: gamefisher 3.0 lower unit gasket

I found the parts diagram on the sear website

I'm sure it is the gear case gasket that is leaking. the part is $2.16

but while I've got it apart should I replace the oil seal on the propeller shaft just in case? it's only $4.30

do you think I'll have a hard time doing this without a manual? I don't know what torque to put on the bolts for the gasket but I'd guess it's not much maybe 5-7 lbs. ???

Re: gamefisher 3.0 lower unit gasket

ok, I just got the gear case gasket in the mail. I've got it coated with gear oil, I'm gonna try and tackle it this evening. it looks like there is a hole for a cotter pin behind the propeller, but the pin is missing. how do I get the propeller off? just pull on it? or do I need some kind of shaft puller or anything? thanks for all the help
