gap on outdrive

I have the driveshaft into the gimbol bearing and into the coupler. It will not go any further. There is about an inch gap from the outdrive to the bellow housing. Is there a reason I can't get this to bolt on? There are still splines visable on the driveshaft going into the coupler. Can someone help?

Did you check the alignment of the engine before you put the drive back on? If not start there. If so give it a good kick if that doesnt help check to make sure the gasket that goes on the inside is installed correctly and stayed where you put it.... these are my experinces...

Ayuh,... My guess is the Shift Shoe/ Foot are not aligned....

Both the controller, 'n the propshaft Must be held in Forward...
I use a bungee strap on the propshaft...

IF, the alignment is dead on, and the shift shoes are lined up, it may be the orings on the splined shaft are not sliding into the gimbal bearing easily. Did you put some oil or grease on them? It may take a kick on the back of the drive to get new orings to go in.

There is a picture of the gap. It is about an inch or more from going together. The driveshaft is in the coupler. I assume that the new gimbol bearing and new O-rings are somewhat of a tight fit. I will give it the ol 10" foot kick or a rubber mallet.

Don't bother doing any kicking until you buy the tool and align this properly.

In this post you never answered the most iportant question which was "have you done an alignment"?

I've never done this before. I'm not sure if I understand what people are saying. If the drive shaft is in the gimbol bearing and in the coupler without an ilignment tool, what would be my biggest problem?

Vibration?

coupler busting?

gimbol bearing freezing up?

all of the above?

I am aware of the danger to an extent, but I dont have an alignment tool nor the money to buy one at the moment. if anyone has one and lives within 50 to 75 miles of Salisbury,NC. (send me a message on PM). Thank you.

In my experience from the pic you posted the engine needs aligned. The driveshaft is going in the couple but it binds and it and wont go any farther you might be able to force it in but then you will ruin your coupler at the least and have to take off the drive and pull the motor to replace the coupler. Thats if it doent ruin the gimble bearing.

Removing the engine to replace the coupler once it fails.
