Looking at the Garmin 240 for fresh water fishing at 90-200 ft depths. I use a Canon down rigger. Any feed back on this vs. other brands? Bass Pro has this unit for the low $200's.

Thanks, Larry :D

Re: GARMIN 240

We have a Garmin 240 Blue. Although we haven't used it in those depths its been reliable and a good unit for the price.

Re: GARMIN 240

I've got a Garmin 240 w/speed n temp. Looked at several, and used a few different ones in Canada last year, and I really Like, and would recommend the Garmin. Very easy to use for a high-definition unit.... :)

Re: GARMIN 240

Kopy Kat
In fresh water unit would work fine at 90 to 200 feet.

One thing you may want to consider is the 240 Blue. It is good for deeper water and Saltwater. The reason I think you may want to look at it is it has dual frequence. With the 240 you will have a 200 Khz transducer and a 20 degree cone angle. Most of the time you will not be able to see your down rigger weight as it will be out side the cone angle.

With the 240 you have dual frequency 200/50. The 200 khz transducer is 15 degrees and the 50 khz transducer is 45 degres. With the 45 degree transducer Most of the time you will be able to see your down rigger weights. This is nice if your are marking fish as you can make sure your fishing gear is at the same depth as the fish. The unit also has more power for deeper water and saltwater but does cost more.

Re: GARMIN 240

You may want to consider the Eagle Seafinder 320DF. I've got one and I absolutely love it. It's a dual-frequency, 500 watt rms unit with true 16-level greyscale. It easily penetrates the water depths you fish in (rated for 1500 ft in saltwater). It's got all of the features as the Garmin 240 Blue, with a larger screen (320 x 320 pixels compared to 240 x 240). It comes with speed and temperature in the transducer, and reads the bottom in excess of 25 knots (about as fast as my boat will go).
Here's the best part... www.Boatersworld.com has the Eagle Seafinder 320DF on sale for $199.99 (including the transducer, speed & temp). They're selling the Garmin 240 Blue for $349.99.
Nothing against the Garmin (they make fine equipment, I have a Garmin Chartplotter), but I know I could find something else to spend that $150 savings on. ;) Happy Boating.

Ahein, West Marine is selling the Garmin 240 Blue for 159.99. That 349 price is outrageous.

Waterinthefuel,
The Garmin 240 Blue that West Marine is selling at $159.99 does not include the transducer. You can get it from them with the transducer for $239.99, however. You can also get it from Boatersworld for the same price, plus free shipping. Boatersworld now sells an Eagle 480DF (same as the 320DF only larger screen) for $239.99. Back in early December when I was quoting prices, these Garmin units were not on sale.
In any event, KopyKat has probably already purchased his fishfinder, so this thread won't benefit anyone except those who don't already own a fishfinder.

Re: GARMIN 240

Oh sorry my shipping was also free, because I drove across town and picked it up myself. I'm lucky to have a West Marine within 15 minutes of my home.
