I am looking at the Garmin 76 gps. It is reg price of $329 at Canadian Tire, and it is on sale right now at about $160.

This is a hand held unit, and I would use it only for boating. I have a GPS allready for my car (a garmin also).

I know nothing of these hand held units, and was hoping that maybe someone out there has one and could fill me in on it.

I was wondering if it showed water depth as you were going, and things like that, and if it comes programed with things like that, or i would have to buy maps. I mostly boat around Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair, & North Channel.

Just wondering if this is worth buying, or a waist of money.

Thanx.

Do a search on that unit because unless its a 76 map gps, that is no sale. They can be had cheaper than that. No GPS shows you the actual depth you are in. Some of the enhanced maps can show the average depth.

Ok, this is where I am getting confused. Now if I was to go out on the water with this unit, as it is out of the box, will it just go blank?

Is buying the extra maps a must?

And if so, would I be better off going with a lowrance, (although lots of $$$)

Is the Garmin 76 more for on the land, with just a little water functionability?

I also understand that no GPS can say exactly the water depth you are in, but should be able to give you an idea, like a chart does.

This is what i am guessing, as like i said, i am a little slow to technology, and have never used one of these before. I love the one in my car, and that is why i am getting interested in one for my boat, (without breaking the bank)

If your looking at the GPSMAP 76 it will not give much detail on Canadian lakes. You won't have much if any detail on small lakes (under 30 square miles).

Click on the link in the previous post and look up your area of interest.

The link that was posted is for topographic maps which don't give any detail for below the water. You need marine charts! Go to the link and select on the water charts and try to find which gives the best coverage for your area.
