I've got a Garmin GPS 12 handheld that will power up, and it looks like it's trying to aquire but never does. It stays on the aquireing page indefinitely. Anyone have a similar problem? Also does anyone know about Garmin repair procedure? Do they have a flat rate for repairs or is it a case by case basis? Just trying to figure this one out. Thanks.

Go into the menu and make sure the unit knows where you are currently. That should speed up the "acquiring" process.

Thanks DJ, I didn't think to try that again, although, it was working fine and I didn't change anything. And it should aquire eventually even if you don't tell it where it is right?

Re: Garmin GPS 12

Garmin has a flat rate repair schedule for discontinued units. I don't know what it is for the GPS-12 (best hand held ever made if you ask me) but, and I hate to say this, its usually a bit on the expensive side. At any rate the information is on their website and easy to find.

As you may know Garmin service is about as good as it gets in most every way, so don't hesitate to send it back to them if you decide its worth the price compared to a new one.

Thom

DR - have you stored it without batteries for a while?

Sometimes they will lose the time and date if it is stored without batteries for some time- even though they have an internal battery for the memory.

This makes the job of looking for satellites difficult for the machine. If you can check your time/date and position (as DJ suggested), you will be giving it the best possible chance.

Not exactly sure that this will be the case with your model - but my new garmin 72 did it to me recently.

best of luck - troy

Re: Garmin GPS 12

Thanks for the replys guys, but I think this unit's shot. I tried turning the unit on and no matter what I do, it wont go past the aquisition "page". None of the buttons work except the on / off button. It's like it needs to be rebooted or something. Garmin wants their flat rate of $99 to fix it. I can get a new low end e-trex for that. Oh well, it was a very nice unit while it lasted. :(
