I am looking for a combination Finder / GPS unit. I am in Eastern Canada (New Brunswick) and looking to see which brand rates better for unit quality, warranty repairs and availability of charts for my area. I have locked it down to the Garmin GPSMAP 420s or Lowrance LMS-332C.

Re: Garmin or Lowrance

For GPS performance, firmware (maps) and support go Garmin.

For SONAR performance go Lowrance/Eagle.

I wouldn't use a dual purpose unit. My (Garmin) GPS goes in my boat, my truck and in my pocket (276C). My SONAR goes only in my boat (Eagle Cuda 168).

If you want sensors like fuel flow ,live well temps ,ect

Lowrance has the best setup to do it without buying a lot of extra parts

As far as charts until the CG gets in gear

(many costal areas are 20 years out of date)

NOBODY has up to date charts ;)

At 99 dollars for the US chart and about the same for there lake chips the Lowrance chips are a very good value

I have a garmin 198 and a eagle 320, the eagel is a noticalby better product in freshwater, that is faster updating @ high speed along with picking up bottom detail and fish....

But the garmin is so packed full of feature's it only take's a back seat when i having a hard time finding fish.

Re: Garmin or Lowrance

Thanks for the advice folks. I just ordered the Garmin GPSMAP 420s along with a BlueChart g2 Vision card for my area. It should take a few day's for it to come in, so I should be able to install before the weekend and try it out. It should be a big improvement from my current setup of a Humminbird Wide 100 fisfinder and a Magellan Meridian portable GPS

I will hold on to it for now as I may be trading the boat next year and would put it back there and keep the Garmin for the next boat.
