Has anyone ever used the gas caddy to fill their boat, It's 50-80 cents more on water and can get costly. I have a poontoon boat I leave in water all summer. I know I will by gas on water at times but if I could save alittle it would be nice. Do these portable gas tanks come with hoses over 10' long?
Appriciate all answers or suggestions.

Re: Gas Caddy

I found the cost of the gas caddy itself made it not worth it--but that depends on how often you'd fill up on the water instead.
You also have to haul it to the gas station and back, and down to the boat--depends on your set-up and hauling vehicle and how you are at lifting it in and out of the vehicle.
I use 5 gallons cans--four of them--and a yard cart (that I had anyway) and fill up at my pier; I keep the boat topped off and seldom use 20 gallons at a time. gas station is just a couple of minutes away.

Re: Gas Caddy

I would love to have one myself but I just can't justify the cost vs using 5 gal cans. Overtons has two "gas caddy" models.

1. 14 gal Flo 'N Go for $209.99
2. 29 gal Tempo Gas Walker for $399.99......on sale

Sure they've got wheels and a hose. A hose would be nice however, I don't need wheels to tote 5 gal cans. About 10 bucks for a new 5 gal can at Walmart. I've got 7 of 'em :D .

Re: Gas Caddy

I had one for awhile, but ONLY because I was setup for it. I'm a contractor, I had aux tank in the bed of my pickup with pump and nozzle. I could fill caddy right on the ground next to my truck. Wheel it over and done. They do work pretty well, however when you consider they weight 100-250lbs when full how are you going to transport it, then remove from vehicle?
Not impossible, just how much upfront money are you willing to spend, then how much time and effort to save $5-$10 each time you do it?

Re: Gas Caddy

Thanks for the responses. We have a couple 5 gal. gas cans but when full they are pretty heavy, I'm disabled and can't lift them and was looking for easier way for my wife-we're not as young as we use to be. I do have a rack that fits onto hitch for hauling things and would use that, then park near boat and fill it. We try to go boating every weekend and can go through a tank every other weekend. Just trying to make things alittle easier but sometimes trying to save a buck makes for alot more work. Thanks for your responses.

Re: Gas Caddy

Your particular circumstances of not being able to use a 5 gallon can is different, so it may be worht the price that it's not for others. But I think you may find it cheaper to fill up on the water. Plus I wouldn't carry gasoline on one of those trailer hitch platforms.
You may find wrassling the 29 gallon Caddy, and paying $400 for the pleasure, isn't worth it. If marina gas is .50 higher, you break even at 800 gallons, or about 28 trips to the gas station to fill up.
I think there are pumps you can use on jerry cans--that with a dock cart may be the answer.

I beleive in many areas the epa has made it illegal for you to fuel your vessel anywhere that is not a designated fuel dock.

Re: Gas Caddy

I did this not long ago, but on land. I borrowed two 30 gallon gas caddies. I put them in the truck empty, with help. Filled at the station for $100. Drove to the boat and filled the boat right from the bed of the truck. I couldn't see doing this on the water, as getting them in and out of the truck, down the ramp, to the boat etc would be quite the hassle.

I will however most likely continue doing this every spring, as I have the caddies to use, and it would save a ton of money, assuming I will fill the boat completely.
