This is a 4 stroke motor !!-----No issues with lubricants in a spray !!----Spraying a carb cleaner into the throat does not clean the working parts of the carburetor.----Take it apart for cleaning !------Test compression .----Check valve clearance.

Racerone sorry, I did not see that till now that is a 4 stroke, and we both say the same thing about the cleaning

This is your carb. If youre saying that plastic crap came out of your fuel hose, it most likely made its way into the carb. It will need to be removed, disassembled and cleaned out. Also figure out where the crap is coming from and make sure no more goes into the engine.

Right. I plan on doing that. I guess I'll buy a new bulb and hose coming from the gas tank. Wouldn't the fuel filter catch it? Anyway plan on having a mechanic look at it. Would just buying a new carburetor be something I should think about. Could anyone tell me a part# for a carb or carb kit. By the way a friend and I tried taking it out and spraying carb cleaner in the air intake in short bursts. It got the motor running pretty much full speed. So he was sure all cylinders are firing. He has the same motor. Unfortunately even after doing that a lot it still slowed down to 1/4 after stopping the carb cleaner. Thanks

A few fish are still biting so still getting out a bit. It goes about 1/4 speed. Also have a trolling motor and I don't usually go far. My recent trick is to move the throttle up and back, up and back and getting maybe 3/5 speed. Does that say that anything else might be the problem rather than the carb? It's not like anything is overheated because it starts out 1/4 speed from cold. Thanks

Ran into a friend who said he took a boat to the local dealer with a carb problem and they just put a new carb in and charged him $700. Apparently the carb on this motor is very hard to find OEM, used or rebuilt. Apparently Mercury had problems with this 4 stroke one and later models switched to fuel injection. So I don't find any except a rebuilt one for 275. My reasoning is if I take the part to them they won't have any grounds for leaving the boat sitting out in the open for the 7-10 days that they talk about now. When I called them they said they look at it, then it takes time to get the part etc. So while everything seems to point to the carb now I think about that lever thing and if it might point to some other problem.

You need to make the decision that you are comfortable with,
ask yourself; will I be able to swap-out the "rebuilt" Carburetor OR let the Dealer do the work backed by some guarantee & you can focus on fishing

Thanks for the reply. I'd be having the dealer swap it out. I never saw a video on this exact motor-carb. But even the ones that were on similar motors looked over my level. The place that sells the rebuilt carb has an excellent rating. I sent them a picture. In trying to be sure it's an exact match they asked me to give the engine and carb#. While I was doing that I put my hand on the bottom of the carb and there was oil on the bottom of it. Yellowish color. Checked the oil stick and it looked full. To my eye almost over full. This thing the dealers here do of have you leave it sitting out outside for 7-10 days is what stopped me from taking it in before. Great for them as they can work steady but no thought to the customer. Right now rain predicted 6 of the next 10 days so change adnd muddy water means prime fishing season is over.

I guess the reason I was bringing up the oil on the bottom of the carb was wondering if that indicated a problem that might be causing the power to cut out.I took the plunge and ordered the rebuilt carb. This way the dealer can't say they need to have it sitting there so long to get parts.Hopefully cheaper for me too. The rebuilt one costs 250 and I get 40 back for the old carb.

I called the 2 boat places here and said I had the part could they just put it in. Both said no I still had to just leave it for at least a week. One said I should count myself lucky as they make some wait 3 weeks. They both said that's just how it isin this area. I guess they figure they've got a monopoly. Just the principe of it , to say nothing of the eventual high cost, makes me want to give switching out the carb myself. The problem is so far I haven't found one with my motor on youtube. Has anyone ever seen a video of taking out a carb on a 2004 Mercury 25 hp 4 stroke? Thanks

This is the only video I've seen on a Merc 4stroke. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlXNXKWUxC8&t=205s It's on a 5 years newer motor and 20hp vs my 25hp. It does like kind of different (like where the oil dipstick is)but kind of similar?

Git it changed. Will test in the Fall as boats being put up for the Summer. Neighbor helped but this partuclar install wasn't quite as difficult as that video. Didn't have to take as much off luckily.
