I have a 1984 22' aquasport with a 85 gallon alluminum tank. The deck has a removable floor panel. The tank is mounted within an enclosed compartment and the smell is contained within this areaThis panel has three inspection ports and when I remove any of them I get a strong smell of gas.I dont think I have a leak but I do get some water in there, probably due to leaks in the deck plate.I removed the floor paneland tightened everything up.I noticed that the outside layer of the fill hose has a lot of cracking on it.Could this allow fumes to permeate through?Ithought of replacing it but it seems alittle difficult because it is foamed in as it comes up the interior of the gunwale. Is there something I can coat the crackled section of hose with? From what I can see its not cracked in the gunwale area, only in the fiberglass"tank".Thanks for any input and thanks Bondo for your previous help,I changed the two spinoffs and added a racor seperator and the boat ran great this weekend!

I Think You've got Serious Problems......

I Also Think You DO have a Fuel Leak........

You'd better Pull the Tank,+ Investigate the Issue...........

I'll Bet there's pin-Holes in the Tank,+ a Cracked Hose Needs Replacing,...... Not Goobbering it up with Whatever........
Leaks,... Any Leaks, Don't just let out Fumes,.. They Leak Gasoline,... Which turns into Fumes......
You're exposing Yourself,+ the Family to an Extreme Danger,......... Fix It Right......
Ithought of replacing it but it seems alittle difficult because it is foamed in as it comes up the interior of the gunwale.
That's WHY boat repairs are So Expensive,.......
It's Never Easy.......

I agree. For the past year I have had fumes inthe back berth of the boat. 1987 Regal. I cut and pulled the boards over the tank and found the vent hose frayed and tank leaking. This is a must find out and od job. Roman

Re: gas fumes

When I bought my boat a couple of years ago (it is an 86' Sportcraft with a 100 gallon built in fuel tank) I decided to replace both the large filler hose and the vent hose. I didn't notice any particular problem with either hose, it was simply a case of having the deck and tank exposed and deciding to replace the hoses while I had the opportunity. WOW! After removing the fill hose I was amazed at how badly deteriorated it was. Was it leaking? I don't know, but at the very least it had to be adding "crud" to my tank. The hose was shot - and I am very glad I replaced it. I believe you will find the same when you finally pull and replace your hoses as well.

Thanks for all the replies, and thanks for a good laugh Bondo.I've been told that before.I'll get to changing that hose soon and see what happens. If I still smell fumes I'll pull the tank when it's near empty. Thanks for the advice!

Re: gas fumes

Why wait until it is almost empty? Pump the gas into a clean bucket and get the tank checked. Why put yourself and others around you at risk because you want to run the gas out first. I am not trying to sound like an a-hole, I just would not want to put my wife and kid on my boat smelling gas and hoping the next time there is a spark from static or a cigarette near by we might explode. Just drain it and get it figured out!!!!

Ayuh,....... I'm with vipzach,..........

You're sitting on a Bomb,..........

It's Really Not Safe to "Run Out the Tank"........

Dry-dock the boat till it's Fixed......We Don't want to see your name in the papers,..... :(
