gas gauge ??

My gas gauge needle cracked over the winter my gauge is nto giving any kind of good reading its jumping all over the place i bought a new gauge now whats the best way to check to see if its the gauge or the float that causing this any ideas would be great ??

Floats are pretty simple. They provide a resistance to ground. High resistance is empty, low is full.<br /><br />At the tank there are 2 wires. One to the guage, the other to ground. If you disconnect the guage wire it should read empty. If you short the guage wire to ground it should read full.<br /><br />You also want to check the connections for corrosion. I had that and it caused the readings to fluctuate.

I have the same issue. I cleaned the connections and reconnected them, now I check and it shows my tank is on E!<br />Should I fill it back up before the reading will be accurate? Also, is there a fuse I should look for as well?

NEVERMIND!!! I found out why it was on E after I fixed it! Ran out of gas while sitting in the slip.<br />My first stupid mistake with the boat... how embarrasing. Needless to say, cleaning the contacts fixed the problem, good thing I was near the gas pumps.
