Gas Gauge

Hi Again,

Today I filled my 55 gal tank to 3/4 full.
I notice that my needle now jumps from 0 to 3/4 full. This "needle jump" is not the usual tank motion that makes the needle rock back and forth. This movement is more like a switch being turned "on" "off" "on" "off".

Question: Is this a float problem in the tank?
Do I need another Gauge?

Thanks,
Lou

Re: Gas Gauge

Oh and I forgot, the gauge is the original that came with the boat ( 19 years ago)

Stunod,

Could be either. See if you can hook up a volt meter to the back of the guage while the system is "acting up". If you voltage is steady, it's the guage, if it varies a great deal-it is the sender.

Re: Gas Gauge

Stunod
I bet it is the guage. Quite common for the guage to stick on empty and with low Fuel levels not enough pressure to unstick. When fill tank have a lot more pressure to unstick the guage. Once is un sticks normaly ok until shut it off again. Try tapping on the guage. Pull the inspection plate in floor and check the mechcanial Gauge when it not working. If it reads correct most likely the ectrical guage. Most tanks I have seen also have the wire for the sending unit attached right there. Make sure it is clean and tight. Sending unit can be bad but I think more likely Ectrical guage. Also this is another place to check voltage.

Re: Gas Gauge

Speaking of guages..

I have two plastic fuel tanks.. both have the build in guages that are in the caps..

they have a spiral shaft with a float on it.. the rising and lowering of the float spins the spiral shaft and that has an indicator on the top to show what position the float is in..

Has anyone seen a electronic version of this that could be hooked to a fuel guage??

I want to hook up the tanks to a DTSP switch so I can switch tanks and have the guage show the level of each tank depending on which one the switch is connecting it to, but have yet to find a tank cap that has an electronic sender unit in it...

Has anyone heard of this? or do I have to concoct my own version ???

regards

Frank
