Gas gauge

1985 trophy aq125a,270 my gas gauge is goofy.when you turn on the key it actually goes down below zero. Made sure connections were tight and clean. Do I replace the gauge,or the sending unit? How do you determine which is faulty?

You use the SEARCH feature in this forum. There are over 100 posts on this particular gauge and many of them have pictures, diagrams and trouble shooting procedures.
