Gas grill onboard ?

For the past 3 seasons I have always put my small portable grill on the dock to do my grilling. The dock was double wide and nobody complained except for not fixin them anything.

At my new slip, the dock is half as wide, can't use a dock locker and now I have no place to fire the grill up. My boat has a back deck with a rail that goes around it. I was thinking of making a shelf that hinges off the rail. Then when I want to clean fish and or cook, I could hinge the shelf up and get the job done.

Here is my problem. On the port side where the side meets the stern (corner) is the gas fill for the boat. Then on the opposite corner is the fuel vent. The beam is 8' and the grill if placed in the center would be ab out 3' from each corner.

I know to meet saftey standards the propane grill must be over the side of the boat so that any leakage of propane will not end up in my bilge or hull. I'm not so worried about the air/water tight fill cap for my fuel tank, but the vent is a different matter. If I use the grill closer to the fill cap (that would put it about 18" away) that would put the grill about 6' away from the vent.

One option is that I could move my vent further forward on the side of the boat, but in reality, it would still only be about 6 to 8' away.

Am I being over cautious, or being crazy for even thinking that I can do this? A mistake of this nature would not be a small one. I am open to thoughts and suggestions.

BTW this is a small portable grill, not one like you would have on your patio or pontoon.

Thanks.......SS

I would say it's a bad idea It would problly be ok but why take the chance
You might just have to go onshore to grill.

Re: Gas grill onboard ?

Thanks for the response. Sorry I didn't get back earlier. Wife said stay home this weekend and get the yard work done since it was covered with snow last weekend.

I wouldn't even think about what I want to do if I have ever smelled fumes from the vent. I have had this boat going on my 5th year. I have yet to smell any fumes.

There are other boats at the marina that do the same thing with their grills. This is what gave me the idea. I'll check to see how close to their tanks their grills are. Some of the pontoons have their grill about 4 or 5 feet away from their tanks, but there is a lot of open air in between them.

I think I will do my other option of relocating the vent. I have plenty of room and extra vent hose to move it.

As for beach area to use the grill? Not on this lake I'm on. There are only a few spots to beach your boat and then I don't really want to because of sharp rocks that can puncture the hull. That happened to me before I got this boat that I have now.

I do most of my cooking inside my cabin galley, but when it comes to frying greasy stuff, I'd rather do that outside. It makes a big mess inside the cabin. I like spending my time fishing and relaxing, not cleaning (unless its fish).

So to make things risk free, I'll be moving my vent onto the port side vs the stbd side. It will also be located about 6' forward of the stern. Then I will make my shelf and only grill on the stbd side. This should give me about 8 to 10 feet away from the vent.

myoutboards, the grill that I have is almost like the one you have pictured. I don't want to leave it out since some lowlifes like taking stuff that doesn't belong to them. So that is why I need it to be easily removeable.

Thanks again..... :)
