gas in outboard that's left outside

I've got a question on best practices for a Merc 4hp (2-stroke) outboard that's always exposed to the elements (kicker on a sailboat). Previously had an external tank setup and took home each time. New Merc has internal tank and I'm not sure of issues with having fuel mix in it all the time -- especially in the Texas heat. I'm imagining that a light-colored cover over the motor will help reflect sun/heat... but what about the vent on cap? Always open? or try to leave the tank half full for expansion? wondered if leaving vent open would cause much of gas to evaporate and throw off the gas/oil mix. The motor probably gets used once a month.

Thanks for any advice!
Bryan

Welcome to iboats.

First off, use a fuel stabilizer all year. That motor doesn't use up the gas fast enough to keep it from going stale. I like the idea of the light colored hood. I'd leave the vent slightly open and the tank nearly full.
