I have a 1997 mariner magnum 40hp 4 cylinders and 2 carbs. It leaks gas out of the bottom of the carbs it drips from the throttle shaft mostly after I shut the motor off. Then drips into water and pollutes the eco system we fish and swim in thank you for your help.

When you remove the cowling, can you see any fuel on it in front of the carburetors? If so, there's a good chance the reeds are leaking. If not, I'd say maybe needles and seats but it's hard to believe both carbs would start leaking at the same time.

c/6

Hooty

Re: Gas leaking from bottom of carbs

Seen quite a few motors dribble some, especially when the motor has the prop end raised, or the motor in not level.

Take a look around under the hood for the obvious like broken hoses or loose screws.

I think you could take the carb(s) off and fiddle with them. Try new needle/seat assemblies. You could also maybe lower the float level a bit but if you find it takes a bit of lowering to achieve a no dribble condition, you may need to consider rejetting to make up for any leanness.

You could take it in to the shop. Make sure that you have agreed that the issue you want fixed is the leaking into the water as it may be somewhat normal for that particular motor. ( I really don't know )

I'm sure there are motors available that don't leak. But which ones are best I don't know that either.
