Re: Gas Mix-100/1 or 50/1??

Motor has limted use of hrs and was used as a trolling&backup outboard. I dont think i will use it alot because my main motor(2005 Yamaha 25hp-4stroke) is a gd. troller and I don't have to worry about what gas-mix goes in the tank!!

I appreciated all the insightful comments about the gas to oil mix and i can see good and bad points either way. Maybe i should just sell this little lightweight 2-stroke and buy a heavy, bulky 4-stroke that will add alot of weight on my transom as my kicker.

My plan(for better or worse) is to move to a 50:1 mix over a period of time with each tank full from the present 100:1

there is absolutely no need to do it gradually. when you want to run 50:1 just do it straight away.

and maybe think about one thing : the engine is 1995 and has always been run with 100:1 - and it runs until now... i hink its the best argument in this discussion if 100:1 is sufficient or not :D

I been running 100:1 in a 25 Yamaha for 14 years and hundreds of hours with no problem at all. Plan on doing it another 14 years.

Re: Gas Mix-100/1 or 50/1??

Well, this thread is a bit lengthy and a little bumpy, but my 2C....it's free. Grin

Back in '65ish I had a McCullough 22 hp twin. Somewhere around there is when they introduced their 3 cyl 60 hp that was later improved to 75 as I recall.....anyhew, When in the local dealership one day, I came across 2 cycle oil in 2 different colored containers. As I recall one was yellow and the other red. One was marked 50:1 and the other 100:1. Don't know the difference nor how long it lasted and the company is no longer in business........sooooo is there a message here? Dunno. I use 50:1 syn blend and would run full syn if I could find it or get Merc to own up to what kind of oil is really in their bottles. The syn blend does very little smoking and with Sea Foam I run a very clean engine internally.

There you have it folks,

Mark

Re: Gas Mix-100/1 or 50/1??

Let me put a end to this thread since i was the orig. poster.
Well I sold the Yamaha 6hp last week mainly because it had alot of salt-water use and buildup in the T-Stat and water passages. I told the new owner it had always been run on 100:1 but its up to him to use whatever mix, but I did pull the plugs and they were real black with alot of carbon buildup and oily. I thought a gd. running motor's plugs were suppose to look like light tan-ish? I wonder if the 100:1 mix had anything to do with those plugs. Anyway put some new plugs in and sold the motor and I don't have to wonder what mix to use!!
