BTW - nobody has given a good arguement why 40:1 would be a bad thing...

Adding more oil just fouls the plugs quicker and leads to more carbon build up.

Carbon build-up is the primary cause of broken rings and scored cylinder walls.

You guys really need to start thinking for yourself rather than doing everything by the book...it's really quite pathetic. This is the ONLY forum out of 15+ mechanical forums I visit where everybody is afraid to do anything different.

different....hmmm....<br /><br />........you mean like overworking your alternator by using it to recharge a dead battery....<br /><br />.......or burning old, untreated oil/fuel mix in your outboard.....<br /><br />.......or running a 200hp motor on a boat rated for 150hp.....<br /><br />....The list could go on and on....<br /><br />

....Who needs to start thinking??? I've said it before and I'll say it again ZmOz, You are willing to take risks that most people on this forum are not. You keep proving my point with every new post you make .<br /><br />JB has already asked you to refrain from making recommendations that differ from the manufacturers specification, but you want to continue to drill your point(or lack of) into the ground.

Charging a battery with an alernator is NOT overowrking it. That is what an alternator is DESIGNED to do. They are rated at a 100% duty cycle. <br /><br />Using old gas, as I recommended at the time, that still smells like gas and is mixed with fresh is not a problem. Let's not start this arguement again. <br /><br />Pretty much everybody agreed with me that the only good reason not to overpower is because of all the sue happy lawyers.<br /><br />Extra carbon buidup is NOT a problem with 40:1. Like I said, I use 32:1 and sometimes a little bit more, my motor looks like brand new inside. I'll take a pic of all the shiny metal for you if you'd like.<br /><br /><br />BTW - I currently hold two patents and have a third pending. Those did not come by being dumb or doing everything by the book.

Never suggested that you were dumb, just that you are not as cautious as myself.<br /><br />I believe there was a patent issued to a gentleman who designed a plane whose wings flapped like a bird. Plane didn't end up flying a foot, but he still has the patent.

Did I mention I'm signing a contract about one of the patents next week that will pay off my mortgage? <br /><br />Anyway, that is irrelivant. Back to my original point: 40:1 is a GOOD idea, NOTHING bad will come of it. If you want to use 50:1 that's fine, but don't do it just because Mercury says so. The only reason mercury says so is because the EPA tells them to. I wouldn't be surprised if they start telling you to use 100:1 dino oil by 2010...
